After our fourteenth fantastic dining experience on August 9th, Mystery Meet Boston will go on hiatus for the remainder of 2011. Many of you know that I moved out to California in the Spring, and with the help of some wonderful Boston food bloggers I have continued to run the group. However, I have simply reached a point where I do not have enough time to continue. Returning to the sunshine has instilled in me a burning desire to spend my time outside, not sitting front of the computer. So I must turn my attention to other pursuits.

It is entirely possible that this group may return; I honestly have not decided what to do with it at the point. I do want to thank everyone who has supported this endeavor over the last year and a half. These events could not have happened without you, and I hope you have enjoyed the experiences as much as I have. I am very grateful to have been able to break bread with so many interesting people in a city with such a rich culinary scene. Thank you.

-Seth

This month’s Unknown Gastronome is a local entrepreneur who has launched numerous culinary endeavors in an attempt to bring new and exciting experiences to the Boston food scene.

How did you get started in the culinary industry?

I have been an entrepreneur since I was very young and I have always loved food. This combination has come together a few times with my first business, Mystery Cafe, a murder mystery dinner theater to Comedy Theater Productions providing entertainment for companies during dinner, and more recently Boston & DC ________ Tours and School and most recently, ________ in the ______.

Tell us about the different jobs you’ve had over the years. How much time do you have?

I have had some great jobs that all seemed to lead to where I am now. My first job out of college was the sales rep for something called the Boston Bar Book. This was a coupon book for a Free Drink in over 300 bars around Boston. When the Happy Hour law came into effect, it put me out of a job.

My favorite job and my last job (since I started my own businesses) was working for a company called Learning Adventure. It was a adult/education and recreation program offering anything from Barhopping: Boston’s Sleaziest Bars to rafting and skiing and 100 other short classes and events.

What is your organization known for?

Quality – it all starts and ends with that. Quality brings repeat business. Nowadays you can’t afford to do poor work as the world is watching on social media. There is very little room for error and lots of room to create and innovate and develop new ideas so Innovation is probably the next, Integrity and Fun.

What projects have you been working on lately?

_________ in the ______ has been my most recent project and that has been personally satisfying as I took it outside of the company to develop on my own, with my own ideas and the talent I have chosen. I really enjoyed creating it and debuting it with Mystery Meet. I am currently working with one of Iron Chef’s Jose Garces restaurants in Philadelphia to try it there too in addition to the Hampshire House here in Boston.

Share your proudest career highlight with us.

Ok, not what you expect. The photo I chose is with Playboy bunny Bridget Marquette from the Girls Next Door. She wrote to me coincidentally on my birthday about doing a mystery at the Playboy Mansion with Hef and the other bunnies. I thought it was a joke.

It wasn’t and although there are many highlights, getting paid to do an event (2 actually) at the Playboy Mansion is one of my favorite stories although like any story this one has a moral, next time I want to be invited as a guest.

Tell us about the best meal you’ve ever had.

One of my favorite meals was in New York City at the Spice Market. Everything from the decor to the staff and how the staff were dressed and how they presented the experience to the tasting menu done family-style inspired by th street food in Southeast Asia really transported us to something beyond the restaurant. The menu included: Regional fish sauces, curries and spices are in dishes like chicken samosas with cilantro-infused yogurt, a vinegar-infused pork vindaloo and halibut cha ca la vong. Makes me hungry just thinking about it.

This month’s Unknown Gastronome is a Long Island native who has made a name for himself as an Executive Chef at an establishment on Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge. Last year, he opened up a new venue in Harvard Square. See if you can identify him.

How did you get started in the culinary industry?

I was cooking from a young age, always in the kitchen at family events. I’m always most comfortable there…

Tell us about the different jobs you’ve had over the years.

Its all been industry really. I served, tended bar, prepped, washed dishes, bussed, you name it! I’ve worked at Bricco, Tea-Tray in the Sky, Dedo….

Describe a typical day in your life.

Get up early say goodbye to the family. I love music, especially hip hop, so I look forward to my ride in which is forty minutes on a good day. From there I get in drink a bunch of espresso and its on to my day…

What is your restaurant known for?

At ___________ ___________ ___________ we serve quality food & beverage with no pretention. We don’t claim to be anything other than what we are, and we let everyone else figure that out. What I can tell you is that were packed every night!!! I think that is the real testament to my food & Aaron Butlers drinks…

What projects have you been working on lately?

Our Nose to Tail dinner is really exciting, May 2nd at 6pm. Make a reservation!

Share your proudest career highlight with us.

Don’t have one yet, my best years and cooking are still ahead of me…

What is your favorite dish on the menu at your establishment?

Don’t ask me to choose between my children. I love them all equally…

Tell us about a dish that didn’t make it onto the menu at your establishment. Why not?

My lamb sausage stuffed lamb belly. Its really a phenomenal dish, It took 22 hours of circulated cooking to yield a perfect product. I can’t produce it here in high volume so I am looking into a couple of ovens that would do the job though…

What’s the secret to a great meal?

You don’t have to spend lots of money on famous chefs who won’t actually be cooking your food. You should go to a place where there is passion, with good friends & loved ones. That’s what its all about, being with them; the food is the soundtrack. In Boston & Cambridge we have lots of passionate talented cooks who can provide that.

What are some of your favorite Boston restaurants?

Too many to name but I love Bondir, Island Creek Oyster Bar, The Gallows, & Trina’s Starlight. I love Trina’s.

ANSWER: Chef Michael P. Scelfo of Russell House Tavern

I am proud to announce that I am launching a San Francisco chapter of Mystery Meet! San Francisco is a city with a rich culinary history, and as somebody returning to the Bay Area after a 16-year absence, I am excited to explore its many creative restaurants and meet its fine foodies. For those San Franciscans who are unfamiliar with Mystery Meet, it’s a social dining group that started in Boston in June of 2010. Once a month, a group of foodies get together to try a new restaurant. However, there is a catch – we don’t tell you what the restaurant is until 24 hours in advance! Don’t worry, we give you clues, so if you know the restaurant scene well you may be able to figure it out. Foodies and the media have raved about our events, so we thought it only fair that we spread the love to a new city.

If you want to join in the fun, sign up for your invitation. I also recommend that you sign up for text message alerts, became a fan on Facebook and follow us on Twitter.

Mystery Meet has been invited to officially introduce the new chapter at the May 18th meeting of SF Beta. Come on out and say hello.
